I used
to think it would be a great idea to be a Captain of Industry or a heavyweight in the world of high finance. In
the early years, things went well enough and I felt I was surely on the road to World Domination.
But, as with many similar dreams, the career didn't maintain
early promise and a lack of discipline and a short attention span hampered my efforts to rise to the very top.
Career is still very important, but happily the days when it was the be-all and end-all are
consigned to the history books. I have discovered a happy work environment at Salisbury Newspapers, part of the
media giant, Newsquest. The day-to-day is media sales, but just like Peggy trying to become a yellowcoat in "Hi-De-Hi", there's
also the chance to indulge my passion for writing a little. Being something of a Johnny Two-Jobs at the moment,
I also work for the Hampton Inn, Salisbury - contemporary dining in very stylish surroundings, by the way.
Anyway, a positive of my mid-life crisis is the realisation
that there are other important things in life beyond career, material things and all the trappings of success.
My outlook might be different if I was that Captain of Industry, of course.
